A production by Destins Croisés | Choreography: Ismaël Mouaraki

In The Rite of Lila, Franco-Moroccan-Canadian choreographer Ismaël Mouaraki draws on his roots to craft a powerful and deeply personal work. Inspired by Lila ceremonies—mystical healing rituals from the Maghreb—he offers a contemporary interpretation of trance through urban-infused movement performed by an all-male cast.

On stage, the energized bodies become vessels of celebration, where sensuality, strength, and memory intertwine. Exploring these traditional night-time rituals—where song, dance, and music come together to soothe the soul—Mouaraki also unveils his own life journey, woven between the Morocco of his childhood, the France of his birth, and the Quebec where he has built his career.

This creation marks two major milestones: 25 years since the choreographer’s immigration and 20 years of his company Destins Croisés. In 2023, The Rite of Lila received the Award for Best Choreographic Work at the Prix de la danse de Montréal, presented by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

A vibrant, intimate, and universal work where tradition is reimagined through a bold, contemporary energy.
